What Is SIP (Systematic Investment Plan)?
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is a way of investing a fixed amount in a mutual fund at regular intervals -
usually every month. Instead of investing a large amount at once, you invest small amounts regularly, which builds investment
discipline and helps you benefit from compounding and rupee cost averaging over the long term.
What Is a SIP Calculator and How Does It Work?
A SIP calculator is a simple online tool that estimates the future value of your SIP investments. It uses your
monthly investment, expected annual rate of return and investment duration to calculate the total amount invested, the estimated
returns earned and the final maturity value. It helps you plan financial goals and compare different SIP amounts and time periods.
SIP Calculation Formula
The future value of a monthly SIP is calculated using the following formula:
M = P × ({[1 + i]n – 1} / i) × (1 + i)
- M = Maturity value of the SIP
- P = Monthly SIP amount
- i = Monthly rate of return (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
- n = Number of monthly instalments (years × 12)
SIP Calculation Example
Suppose you invest ₹5,000 per month for 10 years at an expected return of 12% per annum. Here P = 5,000,
i = 12 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.01 and n = 10 × 12 = 120.
Total Invested₹6,00,000
Estimated Returns₹5,61,695
Maturity Value₹11,61,695

What Is a Step-up SIP?
A step-up SIP (also called a top-up SIP) lets you increase your monthly SIP amount by a fixed percentage every
year. For example, with a 10% annual step-up, a ₹5,000 SIP becomes ₹5,500 in the second year and ₹6,050 in the third year.
Increasing your SIP along with your income can help you reach your financial goals faster. Use the Annual Step-up option
in the calculator above to see the difference.

Lumpsum
Invest a large amount at one time. Suitable when you have surplus money available, but the entry timing has a bigger impact on returns.
Factors That Affect Your SIP Returns
Monthly Amount
A higher monthly SIP amount builds a bigger corpus over time.
Time Period
The longer you stay invested, the stronger the effect of compounding.

Actual returns depend on the fund and market performance - they are not fixed.
Step-up
Increasing your SIP every year can significantly increase the final value.
Expense Ratio & Exit Load
Fund charges reduce the net return you actually receive.
Taxes & Inflation
Capital gains tax and inflation affect the real value of your returns.
